Site Supervisor’s excavation diary – week five (August 29th to September 4th, 2010)

Sunday 29th August.  KP, PB, RH and 16 volunteers

Continued cleaning villa walls and also the dump of stones discovered in Room 51.  Took working photographs of progress.  Did finds washing on site.  Heavy rain shower at 3:50 as we were packing up.  First CLBR (Roman navy) stamped tile discovered during finds washing.  Informal site visit from Roger De Haan – he seemed very interested in the entire project.

Monday 30th August.  KP, RH, PB, AR and 17 volunteers

Finished cleaning the rubble layer in Room 51 – modern  – photographed and removed same.  Cleaned other Roman villa walls.  Also continued work in Trench 1.  Washed finds on site.  Dry but very windy.

Tuesday 31st August.  KP, BC, RH and 12 volunteers

Continued cleaning villa walls.  Removed lower topsoil deposit in North-East area ready for excavation in this area.  Did finds washing on site.   Also continued work in Trench 1 – early Roman ditch sequence here becoming clearer.  Dry all day. 

Wednesday 1st September.  KP, BC, RH, MG and 23 volunteers

Continued cleaning villa walls.  Trowelled over base of Room 51 and also North-East Area.  Did finds washing on site.  Visits from police about nighthawk raid.   Visits also from Lesley Hardy and new project manager, Hannah.   Dry and sunny all day.

Thursday 2nd September.  KP, BC, RH and 17 volunteers

Continued cleaning walls of North-East wing of villa.  Removed final modern deposits within the North-East wing.  Planned, levelled and started digging the North-East area.  Did finds washing on site.  Visit from Jon Iveson (Dover Museum).   Dry and sunny most of day.

Friday 3rd September.  KP, BC, RH and 21 volunteers

Continued preparing villa walls for photography.   Continued digging deposits in North-East area.  Drew plans and took levels.  Did finds washing on site.  Took some photos of the cleaned  villa walls but the light was poor.

Saturday 4th September.  KP, PB, AR and 22 volunteers

Photographed walls of the villa in better light.  Continued digging in North-East area and also continued digging in Trench 1.  Dug slots below villa walls – located early chalk floor.  Site visit from Young Archaeologists Club who helped with digging in Trench 1 – all very keen.  Did finds washing on site.  Dry and sunny all day.
